Dakar has finally left the start podium. Brutal heat and a short 40km special made day one a pretty standard affair. Yamaha claimed the win and then had it snatched away through a speeding penalty. It should’ve been Xavier De Soultrait’s first win, but alas, it wasn’t.

Instead, Sherco’s Garcia claimed the win. Ultimately, winning day one of a Dakar only makes day two more difficult and it’s set to be a tough, long day. Heat will be in no doubt, with luscious greenery of  northern Argentina making for a longish, humid day on the tracks. The morning border crossing will have meant the admin and early starts will have begun too.
