Newsworthy – 9th June

Newsworthy is our weekly news update. Instead of killing your inboxes with re-hashed press releases or junk you don’t need, we’ll pull out a few interesting products, stories and other things we stumbled across from the week, write our thoughts on them and let you read the info for yourself.

Sibirsky Extreme video

Epic music, epic water crossings and some epic crashes. Sibirsky Extreme is essentially famed world traveller Walter Colebatch and this three minute nugget from a couple of years ago catches Walter and a small multi-cultural gang as they travel across an equally epic-sized lump of the earth. It is adventure travel on an epic scale.

Their aim was “to map an off-road trail route all the way from the edge of the European Union, across Eurasia to the Pacific Ocean at Magadan” on a planned route through Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Siberia. A quick look on Google Earth tells us that’s a tad further than just popping down the shops.

Christini AWD Explorer 450

For non off-road fans amongst you, Christini is not a brand you’ll have heard of. Ever since the ill-fated Yamaha 2-Trac project of the early 2000’s, American Brand have picked up and run with the two-wheeled concept. They’re system is super clever and beautifully engineered. They’ll even retro fit the system to an existing off-road or dual sport bike.

There is some inevitable downsides to the AWD system for true off-road racing style use, especially amongst riders who have years of dirt experience. That being said, as a dual sport, gnarly exploration tool, where the aim isn’t to push hard, carry huge corner speed and set fast lap time the AWD system could be immense. The Americans bike is all their own, a lot of it appearing to be identical in appearance to Honda’s super reliable, CRF 450 X… Could this be the ultimate hardcore travel weapon? It’s possible indeed. For anyone who doubts the longevity of 450cc motor, let me point you in the direction Le Dakar…

Dream Racer – The Dakar Rally

Challenges don’t come much more grueling than the Dakar. It’s a project that has seldom been covered well, really Charley Boorman’s Race to Dakar is the only thing that has achieved any type of genuine insight. Step up the the plate, Dream Racer, a film that follows one normal bloke in his hunt to fulfill his dream.

Below is the trailer, but you order the DVD or BluRay or get it on Vimeo on Demand for a measly seven Aussie Dollars from the website.
